Portfolio Update - October 2023

The month of October had another Bank of Canada announcement, which occurred on October 23.  The Bank of Canada held the interest rate of 5.00%.  As mortgages come up for renewal, a lot of people will be in for a major sticker shock.

Also, rents across Canada have increased a lot over the last year.  This is mostly due to the interest rate increases, property tax increases and increased carbon tax.

The economy will start to slow down as people will have less disposable income.

A major thing in Canada occurred which has divided the country.  Justin Trudeau has suspended the carbon tax on home heating oil for 3 years. The major beneficiary of this is people in Atlantic Canada. Besides heating their homes heating (furnace) oil, near 100% of hot water heaters would use the same type of oil.

Premiers and politicians from other provinces say this suspension is unfair to those heating their homes other methods or fuels.

The war in the middle east is the major topic in the news.  In fact, it is more talked about than the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war.

The S&P500 was up 2.35% over the past month.

The S&P TSX Composite Index was up 3.59% over the past month.
