Dividend Update - August 2015

The month of August is another month of dividend income landing in my accounts. This money is used to help pay my expenses if it is needed. If the money is not needed, it is ALL used to purchase new investments to further increase my cash flow.

The price of a barrel of crude oil is still a major focus of the markets and the economy. Some analysts are predicting the WTI price of a barrel of crude oil to remain between $40 to $55 for the next year. At the same time, other analyst are predicting the WTI price for a barrel of crude oil to be around $80.00 a barrel. None of us are able to say where the price of oil is going to be by the end of this year or at the end of the next few years.

The price of stocks has fallen by large amounts recently. This is due to things such as the sell off in China which usually carries over to the North American markets, the price of oil, and the possibility of a interest rate increase in the United States.

  • Emera Inc. (EMA)   - $40.00
  • Enerplus (ERF)  -$ 26.55

  • Dream Office REIT   (D.UN)  - $ 16.61
  • Killam Properties (KMP) - $  14.75
Total = $260.61

This total represents a 12.53% increase from 3 months ago and 57.12% increase  year over year.

I also received another distribution payment of $56.00 for my swing trade in Dream Office REIT in my non-registered account. This is not listed above since it is a trade, so I keep the money in the account and do not pay myself first with this payment. I have received $1435.47 in distributions so far on this trade.

During the month, 3 companies that I own shares in have announced dividend increases which you can read about here and here. What did I have to do to receive these raises? Did I have to work for these companies? Nope.  I am a shareholder of these companies who share their profits with their investors. As the profits increase from year to year, these wonderful companies pay out more and more of the profits to their investors.

I will update my dividend income tab with the new amount. It is great to see money from passive income sources deposited into my brokerage account every single month.

How was your dividend income for August?

  1. I hope you don't need the dividend income money for expenses and are fortunate enough to buy more stocks on the dips in the market this month. Congrats! August was very good for me - my first $1,000 dividend income month ever!

    1. Currently, due to low oil prices my hours have been cut along along with everyone else. The company I work for just had their 3rd round of layoffs. Most people I am working with are down to 3 days a week. My job involves a lot more work so I am 4 days.

I pay myself 30% when the paychecks come it before I do anything else with the money. I realize I might have to pick up a part time job or side hustle for some extra income. As the summers are very hot where I reside I was holding off on the possible part time job. Now that it is cooler out I will have to explore that idea more.

Congrats on the first ever $1000.00 dividend income month. Then will come another month over $1000 before you know it.

    1. Dividend Hustler,

Thanks for dropping by. I definitely welcome the passive income into my life. It is great to know I own shares in companies that keep our economy going like CN and a company that provides electricity to power our lives like Emera. Even better that these companies pay me for being an owner.

  3. Healthy dividend income along with nice increases from your last August total. I'm still loving the Canadian banks. Looks like you are too. I don't have BMO but do hold TD, BNS and RY. Thanks for sharing.

    1. DivHut,

Thanks for dropping by. I definitely loved receiving those raises. The Canadian banks are excellent investments as they have been paying dividends for a very long time and will continue to do so.

  4. Another great month for you. We don't invest in dividends. But since we sold our stocks in March, we managed to avoid the crash in August.
    Cheers!

    1. Tony,

Thanks for dropping by. I drip some stocks but not all. I believe in the companies I invest in for long term holdings. A company like CN Rail has large moat around it due to high barriers to entry. It would be difficult for a railroad to start up for a major railway. So the companies that are out there in North America will be excellent long term holdings. They are even better when you can purchase them at a good price.
